Recently I was looking at fines for GDPR breaches to get better understanding on data protection landscape at the moment. I selected 10 from just December 2020 and January 2021 which were biggest or most interesting. There are more loud fines being issued already in February which I did not include in the list. Data Protection Day 2020

On 26 April 2006 the Council of Europe decided to launch a Data Protection Day to be celebrated each year on 28 January, the date on which the Council of Europe?s data protection convention, known as ?Convention 108?, was opened for signature. That was first legally binding international law in the field of data protection. Data Protection Day is now celebrated globally and is called Privacy Day outside Europe.

Facebook users drop in Europe. What is the takeaway?

Recently Facebook published latest (Q3) user and revenue update, having the overall users base drop (in Europe and US, mainly).

While the drop of users, when compared to total numbers, is small, it is strong signal that users in Europe are not happy with some of Facebook’s practices. More specifically, the drop-in user count is attributed mostly to the Facebook?Cambridge Analytica data scandal in early 2018 when it was revealed Cambridge Analytica had harvested the personal data of millions of people’s Facebook profiles without their consent and used it for political purposes. It has been described as a watershed moment in the public understanding of personal data usage and precipitated a massive fall in Facebook’s stock price and calls for tighter regulation of tech companies’ use of data. This serious breach of privacy no doubt caused some users to simply stop using Facebook.

EDPS issues opinion on Big Data

On September 23 the European Data Protection Supervisor (the ?EDPS?) Giovanni Buttarelli published his opinion “Coherent enforcement of fundamental rights in the age of big data”.

This opinion is part of an ongoing project, launched in March 2014 with the EDPS? “Preliminary Opinion on Privacy and Competitiveness in the Age of Big Data”.
It?addresses the concern that concentration in digital markets could harm the interests of individuals as data subjects and consumers.

Among other, opinion recommends to establish an Digital Clearing House – a voluntary network of regulatory bodies – for enforcement in the EU digital sector, to voluntarily share information about possible abuses in the digital?ecosystem and the most effective way of tackling them.
